Top 10 Interior Decorating Tips
"Each one of the interior decorating tips in this article will make a tangible difference to your space. If you use them all, your home may well change your life!"
Interior Decorating Tip #1 Surround yourself with what you love. What we concentrate on, we get more of. Surround yourself with things that make you smile (laugh, even) – things that express love, joy and beauty, that give your mood an instant lift. For example, you could use photos of loved ones and happy moments in your life, or items that remind you of your favorite places and activities.
Focusing on all things positive has wonderful long-term health benefits as well (ask your doctor!). The picture here shows one of my favourite places, Yosemite National Park in California - one of the most uplifting and beautiful landscapes I have ever been to. (The card is an Ansel Adams photograph.)
Interior Decorating Tip #2 Save energy. Yours. Eliminate anything that is a wet blanket for your spirit. Get rid of things that don’t work, are fussy to operate, get you down, get in your way, or are just plain ugly. You could look at using feng shui to support you with creating a home that makes you feel energetic, capable, and good about yourself.
Interior Decorating Tip #3 Choose your luxuries. If you can’t ‘have it all’ right this minute (who can?), use some spare cash to invest in something that will make a big difference in your daily life. This investment could be as small as a luxurious, mood boosting shower gel, to give your day a great start. Or an everyday tool that is a joy to use. Or consider splashing out on the perfect mattress – after all, this is where you spend one third of your lifetime!
Interior Decorating Tip #4 Calm space – calm mind. Use your home as an antidote to the daily overstimulation of work, traffic, and things to do. Create calming, ‘zen’ spaces that refresh and invigorate you.
Interior Decorating Tip #5 Know which colors make you feel good. The effect of color on our well-being is hard to overestimate. It affects our mood, energy levels, and physical health. Imagine how different you would feel walking into a dingy office if it had bright, sunny-colored walls. Even small color changes, like replacing a throw and/or some sofa cushions, can shift the mood in a room. It’s a simple, inexpensive, high-yield investment.
Interior Decorating Tip #6 Less really is more. If you’re running out of practical, well-designed storage space, you might consider giving some things away rather than adding more storage. De-cluttering is not an easy exercise for most people - it certainly isn’t for me (sigh!) – but it is extremely rewarding. Are you thinking of using some of these tips in your own home? Start with this one. When you take a bagful of discarded suits or books to a charity shop, you create a new stretch of ‘blank canvas’ for your life. You'll feel wonderful. Good things will come of it.
Interior Decorating Tip #7 Think comfort. Don’t be tempted to buy something uncomfortable or high-maintenance just because it looks good. If your new kitchen is a pain to keep clean, or your new designer chairs are too small/too hard/the wrong angle, you will start feeling cranky and uneasy in your own space. Treat yourself to a welcoming home that puts you at ease.
Interior Decorating Tip #8 Be yourself. Whatever is currently ‘hot’ on the interior design scene will not make you stand out from the crowd. It may put you ahead of the competition for a while. Is it a competition you want to be part of? When you are true to yourself, there is no competition.
You are the original. Why be a copy?
Interior Decorating Tip #9 Make your home inspire you. Your home shows what you are about – your values, aspirations, your passion and zest for life – the things that make your time on this planet worthwhile. So you could use home decorating deliberately, to support you and keep you on track with what is most important to you. Let your surroundings remind you daily of what you’re up to in your life.
Interior Decorating Tip #10 Decorate to accumulate. No, I’m not kidding. If prosperity is one of your goals in life, home decorating can be a fun method to help you achieve it. There is no magic involved. If you would like to read more about ‘decorating to accumulate’ - I’m currently planning a free e-course about this topic.
